Northword Communications

As national editor for Newhouse News Service, I helped lead what The American Prospect magazine described as “an experiment in reinventing Washington coverage.” These special reports on the failure of school desegregation and the emerging perception of increased income inequality were examples of what Editor & Publisher Magazine columnist Tom Winship described as “the most exciting press happening in 1991.”

As city editor for the Mobile Press-Register, I directed this special report on pollution in Mobile Bay that won the nation’s top award for environmental reporting in 1994 after resulting in a 142-count indictment of local utility officials.
